Firefighters Carrying a Special Medication to Save Lives from Drug Overdoses
Overdoses in the Charlotte have increased dramatically. Usually the overdoses come from prescription pain medicine and heroin. Carolinas Healthcare system has been trying to find ways to make that number decrease. The solution for these terrible overdoses is a medicine called naloxone. Naloxone is a drug that takes away the effects of other drugs like cocaine and crack. Also this drug could be used when someone is in severe pain or for surgery. Firefighters have decided to carry this drug in order to save more lives faster, according to wsoctv.
Usually when firefighters are called about a drug overdose by the time ambulances get there the person is already dead. It’s a good idea for firefighters to start carrying this drug on the truck. Firefighters are usually the first ones on the scene and there is really nothing for them to do until the ambulance get there so it’s like the have to sit there and watch this person die right in front of them. The patient won’t have to sit there and just wait they can receive this drug and hopefully it can turn the effects around.
Once the firefighters started carrying this drug they have administered it more than 22 times. Also out of those cases 12 of those patients started to gain a pulse again. In Charlotte every fire station has had to use the drug in order to save someone life, according to wsoctv.
This method has become very effective for officials to decrease the overdose rates. Not only are the patients getting help faster they are breathing again meaning that’s one less death from drugs.
